What it is

It's a service that hosts tools, applications, archives and data to allow those designing and creating web-based sites/tools/etc to test their creations using as wide a testbench as possible. Existing and potential Services/Content types List

  1. browsers.evolt.org - the constantly-growing browser software archive - needs to: be compartmentalised via database to permit partial mirroring; have front page redesigned to give more up-to-date and dynamic archive metadata, etc.
  2. standards reference - either links to, and/or mirror(s) of, standards documents, i.e. W3C, RFCs, DTDs, specs, etc.
  3. validators - either links to, and/or locally hosted versions of, standards validator tools, i.e. HTML, CSS1/2, RDF/RSS1/2, etc.
  4. Issues Trackers - registered members can host their own issue tracker(s) for their own site(s). This will be free(beer), and a nice baggie to attract ppl into evolters. Example is like the feature request & issues section of this site.

What it is not

With luck, it should not "just be beo"!

Building Upon and Encouraging Mirroring

redevelop the existing php beo codebase (migrated from the old cfm codebase) to permit:

  • all browser metadata stored in database
  • mirror structure somehow encoded so that partial mirroring of subtrees is available, even if done on a top-level directory basis to begin with
  • much more metadata than is currently available, so that a full record of history can be generated for each browser product, version, revision and release (holy grail)

to get people to mirror, develop some form of incentives, possibly related to Text Ad discussions, and accounts on play.evolt.org (evolters.org), although no reason why incentives should be limited to those - feel free to offer alternatives!
